Manny is 13 years old and lives together with his father, his mother, his two brothers Ranjit and Harry and the wife of Ranjit in Leicester in the Evington Drive. Two of his older sisters are not living anymore with his family and married Punjabi men. That is the reason why they live with their husbands. His mother is always cooking or watches TV and his father works in a Factory , life as an strict Punjabi and drinks a lot of alcoholic drinks. He is not interest of Manny’s work in school and wants him to earn money. Manny’s real name is Manjit but he does not like the name, so his teacher give him his nickname. He is influences by the western culture. His best friend is Ady, which is black. His Father does not like to see that his son plays and hang around with an black child, because he thinks he is a bad influence for Manny an thinks Ady is criminal but Manny is a bad influence for Ady ‘cause of shop lifting an smoking.
Chapter 2 - May
Manny is in year 8 in the school when Harries wedding is in set. He has an cousin, Ekbal. His father is the opposite of Manny’s father: He is a successful doctor, is influence by the western culture and is interest for the school education of his son. Manny is alone at home because his family is at a wedding. He likes it because he cans watch TV about football, his favourite activity, and his favourite football club, Liverpool. He tells about the importance of football for him. To invite friends is a bad decision because his father would bring Manny a lot of trouble. Later on his family comes back and his drunken father tells Manny about the arranged marriage for him. Manny does not accept it.
Chapter 3 - July
Manny is angry to have a room with his brother because of his disorder and his stinky clothes. So he destroys the cassette from Harry. He is thinking about what his father tells him about his arranged wedding. In the summer holidays Manny meets with Ady in the city. He loves to be there because of the multicultural and it is a way to escape from the problems in his family. He likes to be born in England so it’s the reason why he is influence by the western culture. Often he and Ady do a lot of excurses. For example shoplifting and sale it in school or playing football. In Leicester live a lot immigrants families from Asia, so most of the shops are Asian shops. Ady wants to meet a girl with name Sarah. So they meet together. A girl names Lisa with ringlet was there, too, and Manny falls in love with Lisa. But Manny was not sure to wanting a girlfriend.
Chapter 4 - August
Manny get consequences about the cassette from Harry. Because of his knife, which Manny wanted Harry to scare, Manny gets problems from his father. Together with Ady, Ekbal, his friends and some boys from his school Manny plays football. After that Ady wants to go home, but Manny wants to go to town because he wants to meet Lisa again. In the town Ady does shoplifting again and steals a pen. The boys meet the girls accidental again and invite them for a coffee.
Chapter 5 - October
Now Manny goes in the year 9 at school. Manny finds out the real name of the ringlet girl. She is calls Lisa. He thinks about to have an date together. But it is impossible that she could be his girlfriend because of his father. He would be very angry. Lisa would not accepted by his family. Manny meet Ady with his girlfriend Sarah at her. They are now in love and say a good word about him to Lisa. Ady wants to be alone with Sarah, so Manny watches TV. After they goes at home Ady tells Manny that he had sex with Sarah, but Manny says Ady is lying. He comes home back and his brother Harry pushes him around about his behaviour. He discriminates him because of his wrong Punjabi lifestyle.
Chapter 6 - December
Manny has his 10th date with Lisa and are drinking coffee in a Italian bar. She tells about her parents. They are good educated and have very good jobs instead of Manny’s parents. He does not want to tell about his parents and Lisa does not ask about that. Lisa is his girlfriend. Manny comes back at home and his cousin Ekbal visits him with his family. Ekbal aks Manny about the arranged wedding about the true. Manny recognizes that his father means serious about the wedding.
