Part 2 - a year later
Chapter 7 – December
Harry married his wife Baljit and lives now like Jas, Ranjit’s wife, with Manny’s family. Manny and his friend Ady are shopping lifting again in a shopping centre. Only Manny steals a empty CD case and is caught by a policeman. He is in a interview room and because of he did it at “first” he must only wait for a family member. Ranjit and Harry comes and must write down at documents about Manny’s stealing. They came home. Harry starts to get aggressive like their father and tells Manny that he is a shame for the family. Ranjit wants to talk with Manny normal but he try only to go in his room. Ranjit comes after an hour to his room. Manny starts to cry and Ranjit comforts him. This is a new situation for Manny and strange, too. He makes clear that he does not want to have the wedding because of his age.
Chapter 8 – May
Because of the day (Sunday) the father is sober. It is about the Punjabi traditions. Harry or Ranjit did not tell about the shoplifting to the father because Manny would be expel from the family. Manny’s father had a strict childhood. He should to do only work like in military because his father, Manny’s grandfather was in the Indian military. His father starts to talk about Manny’s arranged marriage. The Punjabi girl is the daughter of a friend and lives in India. If she and Manny are 17 years old she would arrive at England legal and marries Manny. His father married Manny’s mother the same way. So a typical tradition. His father notice his reaction and makes clear that Manny would ruin the family’s name. His mother starts to cry and pray. Manny does not know what he must do. He must to have his wedding.
Chapter 9 – June
Manny has the relationship between Lisa one year. The principal for the year 10 at school, Mr. Sandhu, wants to talk with Manny. Manny does not really know about a reason why he is there. Sandhu talks about Manny’s performance at school because it is dropping. He asks him about bullying or the difficult of some subjects but nothing of these possible reasons are right. After he asks if his parents knows about his relationship with Lisa.
Chapter 10 – June
After the meeting between Manny and Mr. Sandhu, Manny tells Lisa all about the meeting and his arranged marriage. Lisa is shock about it, but wants to stay besides Manny. Sandhu knows about Manny’s problems because he is Asian but married a white wife. Together they wait for Lisa’s mum because she comes to bring they home. Manny does not want to tell something about his problems at home to her mother, so he wants only to go home instead to eat together with them. He is all the way long silent. Besides this situation Manny miss his friend Ady because he didn’t see him for a while.
Chapter 11 – November
Manny’s start in the year 10 is fail. Because of Ady he is skiving a lot of subject, steals things at shops and does not show engagement for school. He feels free but Lisa is against about skiving. Since the meeting with Mr. Sandhu he wants to know more about Manny’s situation in the family. The only teacher who Manny likes is Mr. Cookes. And it works that he stops to skiving for a month. One evening only the wifes of his brothers are at home. So Ady takes Manny to a bar there Ady’s brother stands front of the door because it is the night before his 16th birthday. They can go for free. At night Manny is drunken and go at home which he is thinking that he gets in trouble because of his father but nothing happens.
Chapter 12- end of November
Manny has because of the last night a hangover and sleeps long, so he does not go to school. He thinks about the time as he was sharing a room together with Harry. Manny is thankful about to have a own privacy. It’s his birthday. So he, his father and Harry with some friends are going to a bar in the near. But Manny does not like it because it is to Asian. He wants to go home but Harry laughs about him that Manny does not want to be Punjabi. And Manny funny about the Harry and his arranged marriage. Both start to quarrel. Manny calls Lisa to ask if he can go round to her. He wants to break out free.
Chapter 13 – December
Manny talks with Lisa and her father about his problems. Furthermore Lisa wants that Manny stays at her home because her parents wants to discuss about something important. Before Manny wants to go to Lisa Manny gets to know that Sarah is pregnant and Ady becomes the father. At Lisa’s home the parents talking about sex education and something else before they are going out because they has an dinner. That evening both are alone at home and have the house for themselve.
Chapter 14 – March
Manny spends a lot of time especially at the night in Lisa’s home with her. This is for him very important that the consequences are his bad grades. If he doesn’t be good enough and doesn’t end this skiving Manny would never get his GSEC after the year 10 because he would pass out from school. Ady comes back to Manny and reminds him that he has birthday. Manny skives again and goes with in a pub again to celebrate. Ady talks about his problems: he cans not offer something for his family, Sarah and his child. After Manny comes back to school and is catch by his teacher. He reminds about nothing and gets to know that his education is done and he does not get an GSEC.
Part 1 - four years earlier
Manny is 13 years old and lives together with his father, his mother, his two brothers Ranjit and Harry and the wife of Ranjit in Leicester in the Evington Drive. Two of his older sisters are not living anymore with his family and married Punjabi men. That is the reason why they live with their husbands. His mother is always cooking or watches TV and his father works in a Factory , life as an strict Punjabi and drinks a lot of alcoholic drinks. He is not interest of Manny’s work in school and wants him to earn money. Manny’s real name is Manjit but he does not like the name, so his teacher give him his nickname. He is influences by the western culture. His best friend is Ady, which is black. His Father does not like to see that his son plays and hang around with an black child, because he thinks he is a bad influence for Manny an thinks Ady is criminal but Manny is a bad influence for Ady ‘cause of shop lifting an smoking.
Chapter 2 - May
Manny is in year 8 in the school when Harries wedding is in set. He has an cousin, Ekbal. His father is the opposite of Manny’s father: He is a successful doctor, is influence by the western culture and is interest for the school education of his son. Manny is alone at home because his family is at a wedding. He likes it because he cans watch TV about football, his favourite activity, and his favourite football club, Liverpool. He tells about the importance of football for him. To invite friends is a bad decision because his father would bring Manny a lot of trouble. Later on his family comes back and his drunken father tells Manny about the arranged marriage for him. Manny does not accept it.
Chapter 3 - July
Manny is angry to have a room with his brother because of his disorder and his stinky clothes. So he destroys the cassette from Harry. He is thinking about what his father tells him about his arranged wedding. In the summer holidays Manny meets with Ady in the city. He loves to be there because of the multicultural and it is a way to escape from the problems in his family. He likes to be born in England so it’s the reason why he is influence by the western culture. Often he and Ady do a lot of excurses. For example shoplifting and sale it in school or playing football. In Leicester live a lot immigrants families from Asia, so most of the shops are Asian shops. Ady wants to meet a girl with name Sarah. So they meet together. A girl names Lisa with ringlet was there, too, and Manny falls in love with Lisa. But Manny was not sure to wanting a girlfriend.
Chapter 4 - August
Manny get consequences about the cassette from Harry. Because of his knife, which Manny wanted Harry to scare, Manny gets problems from his father. Together with Ady, Ekbal, his friends and some boys from his school Manny plays football. After that Ady wants to go home, but Manny wants to go to town because he wants to meet Lisa again. In the town Ady does shoplifting again and steals a pen. The boys meet the girls accidental again and invite them for a coffee.
Chapter 5 - October
Now Manny goes in the year 9 at school. Manny finds out the real name of the ringlet girl. She is calls Lisa. He thinks about to have an date together. But it is impossible that she could be his girlfriend because of his father. He would be very angry. Lisa would not accepted by his family. Manny meet Ady with his girlfriend Sarah at her. They are now in love and say a good word about him to Lisa. Ady wants to be alone with Sarah, so Manny watches TV. After they goes at home Ady tells Manny that he had sex with Sarah, but Manny says Ady is lying. He comes home back and his brother Harry pushes him around about his behaviour. He discriminates him because of his wrong Punjabi lifestyle.
Chapter 6 - December
Manny has his 10th date with Lisa and are drinking coffee in a Italian bar. She tells about her parents. They are good educated and have very good jobs instead of Manny’s parents. He does not want to tell about his parents and Lisa does not ask about that. Lisa is his girlfriend. Manny comes back at home and his cousin Ekbal visits him with his family. Ekbal aks Manny about the arranged wedding about the true. Manny recognizes that his father means serious about the wedding.
